A USB/MIDI Keyboard is the term commonly used to describe a keyboard that is used to control sounds , parameters and features when using a computer for recording.
The keyboards have no on-board sounds of their own but they can access the sounds and functions in a computer or sound module via a USB or Midi connection.
A useful feature to look for is "velocity sensitivity" which enables you add expression to your playing. The more controls the keyboard has the more parameters you have immediate access to.
